Chalke Valley History Festival

Talk: ''Interpreting Iron Age food: from the dig to your plate''

A half hour talk about what was eaten and cooked in Britain during the Iron Age, before the Roman conquest of 43AD.
We will quickly present what can be learnt from archaeology (finds, analysis) about ingredients and utensils, how archaeological experiments can help us understand better some cookery techniques and practicalities, how we can taste the past... or not! Also how close 21st century preoccupations and trends about food (as well as a lot of ''new'' recipes) are from 2,5 millenia old concepts.

With always our one main aim: explaining that no, our ancestors did not survive only on bland gruel and thick porridge, but that historical food can be as complexe and palatable as modern one and actually inspires young and famous chefs as well as traditionnally British dishes!

As a skilled day labourer Mistress Gabrielle is helping the Shakespeare's household to get ready for their Christmas Celebrations... in the kitchen!

She will present some of the foodstuffs, dishes and ingredients that were used in a 16th century Christmas meal. The more exotic, the more expensive, the better to impress your guests! Gingerbread, Twelth Night cake, mince pies, sugar paste, candied fruits ... as well as where these treasures of spices came from at the time.

But mainly she will be making marchpane (marzipan) by hand, grinding, mixing, measuring, shaping, colouring, even gilding ... and -hopefully- realising a stunning marchpane centrepiece for Master Shakespeare's Christmas table!
